The Bloody City ~ The Goddess Fish ~ #giveaway

The Bloody City

by Megan Morgan

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Urban Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Name : Megan Morgan
A little about yourself (ie your education Family life etc ):

I live in Cleveland, Ohio—which is way too cold in winter for my tastes, but Chicago is my dream city and it’s just as cold, so I’m crazy in that respect. I have an adult son and an adult cat who still acts like a kitten. I’m a self-taught writer and I’ve never wanted to do anything with my life except write. Unfortunately, it doesn’t pay the bills yet, so I’m also a bartender and I’ve worked in bars and restaurants for nearly a decade. I write mostly urban fantasy and paranormal romance, but I also dabble in contemporary romance and erotica.

Tell us your latest news?
The second novel in my Siren Song urban fantasy series, The Bloody City, was just released on November 10th. The third book in the series, The Burning City, will be released in July 2016. I’m also working on a fourth book. The first book in the series, The Wicked City, recently won best urban fantasy at The Romance Reviews Readers’ Choice Awards. I’m very happy with this series and how well it’s been received, especially since I’m a new author. I’m going to keep writing it until the characters stop talking to me.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I started writing as a teenager in high school—I used to write stories in notebooks and share them with my friends. I was terrible at it back then, but from the moment I started writing my first story, I knew it was what I wanted to do. Writing felt natural. I think I was born a writer and I was fortunate enough to figure it out early in life. I always loved working on essays and creative writing assignments when I was in elementary school, too.

What inspired you to write your first book?
I’m not sure if this means the first book I ever wrote (which I still remember and cringe at) or the first book I got published, but either way it’s hard to simplify it. Ideas for books come from many different places and it’s not just one idea that creates an entire book. Books are born from an idea, but many ideas pop up along the way to move the events in the story forward. I always loved Chicago and wanted to write a series set there, so that’s how I got started on this one.

Do you have a specific writing style?
I tend to have a ‘conversational’ style. People have told me reading my writing is like listening to someone talk. It’s kind of blunt and organic. I take it as a compliment. I want the reader to feel like I’m telling them a story, after all.

How did you come up with the title?
The first book in the series, The Wicked City, is a play on the term ‘The Windy City’ because it’s set in Chicago. The Bloody City follows suit in keeping with the series theme and also because there’s a lot of vampires in this book. Each book in the series will be called The ___ City.

How much of the book is realistic?
Many of the descriptions of Chicago are realistic, because I’ve been there many times—though I did make up a few places. I also tried to be ‘realistic’ in my depictions of how paranormal powers in this world are scientifically explained. A lot of the series revolves around how science treats paranormal people. I still use a good bit of magic and plain old fictional storytelling, but I tried to give it a realistic feel.

What book are you reading now?
I’m reading Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to get around to it when he’s one of my favorite authors. I want to get them all read before the movies come out!

What are your current projects?
I’m working on the fourth book in the Siren Song series—even though I intended it to be a trilogy, it didn’t quite work out that way. I’m also an author for the City Nights series from Tirgearr Publishing, which is contemporary erotic romance.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
Don’t give up. I spent a lot of years believing I would never get to where I am today and doubting myself. I thought I would never be published, let alone have a series published. The only way to assure you’ll never get published is to give up completely. Keep learning, keep writing, and keep trying.

What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?
I’m not a big fan of movies, but I watch a lot of TV shows. Here is a short list of TV shows I watch/have watched in the past: Vikings, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Penny Dreadful, Orange Is the New Black, True Blood, Hell On Wheels, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Peaky Blinders, Luther, Supernatural, Magic City, Sherlock…the list goes on and on. As you can see, I don’t have any one genre I stick with!

BLURB:

On the run…

It’s been four months since the head of the Institute of Supernatural Research was murdered. But that doesn’t mean June Coffin is out of hiding yet. In a world where being different can get you killed, it’s best to keep a low profile. Especially for a Siren who can control other people with the call of her voice. That goes double if your powers might be inexplicably growing…

On the hunt…

But June isn’t the only one trying to clear her name. There’s Sam, the charismatic paranormal rights leader, and Micha, the first human on record to go paranormal. All of them must bargain with a mysterious vampire named Occam Reed if they want to stay alive.

Out of time…

As tensions increase between humans and paranormals, June must decide who to trust. If only she could hear the song inside her heart…

EXCERPT:

The whole thing was like attending one’s own funeral, only slightly less creepy.

Midway through the next speech, movement behind the stage caught June’s attention. A group of people were gathering back there. Her spirits lifted. Maybe the FBI was about to throw down.

“What’s going on back there?” Sam stood on his tiptoes.

“Probably more people who want to talk.” June sighed.

She skimmed the crowd, seeing if anyone looked as bored as she felt. A familiar face popped out for a split second, and she quickly looked back at the spot. She had to be imagining things.

She wasn’t.

Roughly thirty yards away in the tight-packed crowd, a man stood, staring at them. He wore a hoodie despite the heat, the hood pulled up and shielding his face. His eyes were bloodshot and watery.

“Sam.” She scrabbled at his hand. “Someone’s watching us.”

The man moved toward them. The speaker on stage had finished and other people were coming out. Sam was focused there, but he looked at June, and then around.

“Occam,” she whispered. “To the left.”

Occam pushed up next to them and stopped. His eyes were rimmed with red, his skin flushed.

“I know you’re in there,” he taunted.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Sam whispered.

Dread welled in June’s chest. The intensity of Occam’s gaze chilled her to the bone beneath the blazing sun.

The blazing sun. A vampire was out in broad daylight. He didn’t even have the benefit of shade, like at the clinic. Why?

“Get out of here,” Occam said. “Or you are going to die.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

My name is Kevin Laymon. My passions are space exploration, music, sailing, snowboarding, wildlife, and of course writing. I have been writing for some time but the focus has been primarily on short stories and dark poems strictly for personal use. Future Winds is the first of a handful of novels I am working on for publication. I grew up in upstate New York and have lived up and down the east coast. New York is a location that holds a very special place in my heart. After working a wide range of jobs that I hated for far too long, Sara my significant other, and I decided earlier in 2015 to make some dramatic changes and travel. We scraped together some cash, I quit my job, and we moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where we live a libertarian life as vegetarians. We share our desertscape living quarters with an aquatic turtle named Taz and a rabbit named BunBear. On October 9th 2015 Sara & I got married in Las Vegas, Nevada. The sunshine in New Mexico has helped immensely in illuminating a greater perspective as to who I am and what I was placed on this planet to do; that is to teach and inspire. I have a hunger to awaken humanity so that we may break away from our programed way of thinking. Our minds are powerful and I encourage everyone to open them up, exercise them, and tap into the potential I know every living man woman and child has. Though my stories at times can be very dark there is a reason for everything I do. Perspective, perception, and relativity are everything in the world of literature.

In Her Blood ~ Janice Jones ~ Goddess Fish ~ #giveaway

In Her Blood

by Janice Jones

GENRE: New Adult Romance, Paranormal

BLURB:

Alex Stone, an ex vampire hunting assassin, is the owner of a hot new clothing company. The only thing she's killing is her competition - until she gets a phone call from her past.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She enjoyed seeing those chains of pure silver wrapped around the vampire’s scrawny arms like tattoos. He barely resembled the picture of the old parish priest the Cardinal sent them two weeks ago. His brown skin hung from his bones like an ill-fitting suit. His paunch bounced up and down as he struggled to get loose. It took longer to catch him, much longer than it should have, but all’s well that ends well.
Alex Stone, call-sign Dagger, ran her fingers through her dark hair. Flakes of dried blood and sand fell as she pulled the dirty mess into a ponytail. Benjamin Palmer, Team Commander, snatched her wounded hand back down and tightened the field dressing as he griped at her about how dumb it was to try to catch the sharp end of a knife with her hand. She knew that . . . now.
“Who do you think you are,” he said as he gave the knot one last yank, “Superman?” Ben checked her busted lip with a shake of his head. “That’s gonna hurt like hell till morning.”
Alex just nodded, taking the pills in her good hand and swallowing them with a quick sip of warm water from his canteen.
Under normal circumstances, Alex would be pulled from the field, evaluated and possibly scrubbed from the next assignment for that stunt. But time was running out and this wasn’t normal, not even for the top vampire hunting team in the country.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Being an introvert doesn’t mean you have no voice. It just means you have the ability to communicate in different ways. For new author and champion introvert, Janice Jones, that way is writing. She began by reading anything she could get her hands on, but after college, she found herself in roles that required more business-focused writing than fiction. This didn’t stop her – she continued to create her own stories to feed her passion for the written word. Honing her skills as a paralegal for several years, Janice continued to feed the beast by spending every spare minute she could creating the world of her first fictional character Alexa Stone.
In Her Blood, the first book in the Dagger Chronicles series, will introduce New Adult Fiction readers to the adventures of an ex-assassin and vampire hunter as she returns to the fight after many years of hiding in plain sight. The idea for In Her Blood came during a rough time in Janice’s life. Overcoming loss can be tough for anyone. For Janice, writing helped her focus and heal. As a tribute to her late sister, she had the opportunity to release a short story entitled “Dancing on a Sunday Afternoon” in 2009. Receiving positive feedback, she continued to write and focus on improving every way she could. Earning a Master’s in Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University, Janice was encouraged to finish the Dagger Chronicles series and pursue publication. Rejections came, but she never quit. Now, her debut novel will soon have a place next to some of her favorite fiction.
Excerpt:
Training
It never failed to give her a thrill when she saw the moonscape rush by underneath her ship, and the blue curve of Earth rise above it. Aisha smiled at its beauty.
Down there, girls her age were wondering about homecoming dances, and what dress they’d wear, or which boy would ask them out. She was much happier here, piloting her ship, zipping at breakneck speeds across the Moon, and getting ready to break into deep space.
“I think I see them,” said David, her navigator and co-pilot, sitting in one of the wing pods to her right. “Two-seven-zero karem one-nine-eight.”
“Confirmed,” came the clipped voice of Soo-Kyung, her gunner. Aisha glanced to the pod on her left and her eyes met Soo-Kyung’s. The Korean girl smiled and nodded.
Aisha always wanted a visual confirmation. Comm lines could be hacked and voices faked. Soo-Kyung knew this instinctively. That’s what made them a great team.
“Okay,” said Aisha. “Weapons hot. Let’s check them out.”
She punched in the coordinates, and the ship turned towards their target.
“Visual range in five seconds,” said David.
“I see them,” Aisha replied. Her heads up display started to light up with targets. Squares projected on her canopy, wrapping tiny dots that could easily be mistaken for stars to the naked eye.
“That’s a lot of ships,” she said, awe sneaking into her voice.
“That’s a bloody awful lot of ships,” said David.
Soo-Kyung was business as always. “Orders?”
“Can you confirm ship type?”
“They are mostly type-three fighters. About eighty of them.”
“What else?”
“A single mothership. That’s the target.”
“No other fighters?”
“A couple of type-ones, but hard to tell with all the movement.”
The fighters were moving around the mothership, following what looked like random patterns, making it hard to get a radar lock.
“Are they moving to intercept?”
“No, sir.”
“David, probe the edge of their defense shield.”
His gentle voice sounded in her earpiece. “Yes, Sir.”
David took the ship forward slowly, while Soo-Kyung watched the behavior of the enemy fighters. They knew from experience that these ships could turn from defense to offense in the blink of an eye. If they didn’t react, they could find themselves surrounded and destroyed in seconds.
“We are at the edge of previous attack ranges,” said Soo-Kyung. “Recommend that we hold at this position.”
“Do it.”
The ship halted, and they floated in space, watching the enemy.
“Any update on ship types, David?”
“The best I got is maybe two or three type-ones, the rest are definitely type-three.”
She wished she had read the spec books more closely, but was glad David was there. “Turning radius of type-threes?”
“Two hundred degrees,” he answered, almost in reflex.
“Distance of fighters from the mothership?”
“Average about three hundred clicks.”
Soo-Kyung raised an eyebrow. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
“Yes,” said Aisha. “Full frontal assault, all shields on front.”
“If we leave our back exposed--”
“Hopefully they won’t get a chance. Maximum throttle, straight at the mothership, direct all energy to front shields.”
“Including lasers?”
“Including lasers. We’re on bullets and torpedoes. Can you do it?”
She heard the smile in Soo-Kyung’s voice. “Done.”
“Good. And fire at will.”
“Roger.”
“David. Punch course in.”
“Course, aye.”
“Manual control to me.”
“Roger.”
“Here goes nothing!”
Aisha punched the program, and she felt the craft lurch as they accelerated forward. She continued its burn, getting faster and faster as they approached the enemy ships.
“Ships turning to intercept.”
“Acknowledged.”
She saw the enemy ships swarming to intercept. Suddenly their random patterns stopped, and they turned, almost as one, bearing down on her. They opened fire, but the forward shields held.
“Intercept in five seconds,” said Soo-Kyung. Aisha marveled at her ability to stay calm, and it seemed the more stressful the situation, the calmer she was.
And just like that they flew through the squadrons of enemy fighters, on a course straight for the mothership.
“They’re turning to intercept.”
Time seemed to slow down in her mind. The mothership approached weapons range at a painful crawl. The enemy fighters, now behind her, were slowly turning to follow them, with a clear shot at Aisha’s tail. She’d turned off their lasers, directing their energy to the shields, so they’d need to be close for ballistic weapons to be effective.
It was going to be tight. Once the enemy fighters had turned around, the back of Aisha’s fighter was exposed. The lead ones had almost turned, and were ready to open fire.
But then Soo-Kyung had her target locked and opened up with everything she had on the mothership. Direct hits, but the ship stayed intact.
A hit on their right wing made the ship lurch.
“Now would be a good time, Soo-Kyung.”
Aisha looked to her left, seeing her friends’ face deep in concentration. Another torpedo launched, hitting a module to the rear of the mothership's bridge. A small explosion was followed by several large ones, but before the ship was destroyed, Aisha’s ship was hit again. This time right in the engines.
Aisha felt her ship lurch. Red lights all over her console. The reactor had taken a direct hit. It was about to go critical. Her heart was beating hard. She reached for the eject buttons, hesitating long enough to see the mothership go up in a ball of flame.
The moment’s hesitation was enough.She felt the ship lurch as the reactor gave out. Her mind slowed as the white flash enveloped them. She had enough time to realize, with resignation, that she was dead. Both co-pilots too.
The simulator door opened, and Captain Simms’ craggy face looked in at her.
“You’re dead. All of you. Again,” he said. Disapproval in his voice. “I thought you guys were better than that.”
Target: Tungsten Excerpt By Heather Long
The black-garbed, anonymous soldiers who picked them up and dragged them back to the team moved forward. Three stood next to Poppy, the other four were beside Titanium.
How the fuck is he even alive?
“It’s time,” Titanium announced.
One by one, the ghosts removed their hoods—revealing face after familiar face.
Silence.
As if a nuke obliterated all thought in the room, everyone stood frozen. Waiting to wake up. Maybe waiting for the shock to sink in.
Zinc, Tungsten, Tin, Nickel, Thallium, Lithium and Uranium were alive. Everyone who had “died” in Russia stood side-by-side. Everyone but Gold.
Tungsten stared at Copper. Their eyes locked before he slid his gray-green gaze to Gabriel then back to her.
Gabriel palmed Copper’s shoulder, the weight of his fingers grounding her as the world seemed to slip sideways. Merc moved in front of her a half step. Brad? Her mind couldn’t process the data she’d received. Brad. Alive.
Alive.
Brad isn’t dead.
No. He died. When she’d stood inside the casino and an explosion tore it apart, silence accompanied the roar. A silence so profound, it threatened to swallow her. She remembered the first time the world swallowed her. When it spit her back out, Brad and so many others were dead. The second time, she’d woken beneath rubble and debris atop Cobalt—alone in the dark with a dead man.
No fire accompanied the second detonation, but the silence exploded all around her. Merc shifted more, breaking her line of sight, then the sound rushed in, flooding her. She couldn’t breathe.
She couldn’t be there.
I can’t do this.
Chrome’s voice pulled the pin on the grenade. “What. The. Fuck…”
 Heather Long
National bestselling author, Heather Long, likes long walks in the park, science fiction, superheroes, Marines, and men who aren’t douche bags. Her books are filled with heroes and heroines tangled in romance as hot as Texas summertime. From paranormal historical westerns to contemporary military romance, Heather might switch genres, but one thing is true in all of her stories—her characters drive the books. When she’s not wrangling her menagerie of animals, she devotes her time to family and friends she considers family. She believes if you like your heroes so real you could lick the grit off their chest, and your heroines so likable, you’re sure you’ve been friends with women just like them; you’ll enjoy her worlds as much as she does.
Rebecca Royce
As a teenager, Rebecca would hide in her room to read her favorite romance novels when she was supposed to be doing her homework.
She is the mother of three adorable boys and is fortunate to be married to her best friend. They are transplants from the northeastern part of the United States to the great state of Texas, specifically Austin.
She is in love with science fiction, fantasy and the paranormal and tries to use all these elements in her writing. In her world anything is possible, anything can happen, and you should suspect that it will.
 Saranna DeWylde
Saranna De Wylde has always been fascinated by things better left in the dark. She wrote her first story after watching The Exorcist at a slumber party. Since then, she's published horror, romance and narrative nonfiction. Like all writers, Saranna has held a variety of jobs, from operations supervisor for an airline, to an assistant for a call girl, to a corrections officer. But like Hemingway said, "Once writing has become your major vice and greatest pleasure, only death can stop it." So she traded in her cuffs for a full-time keyboard. She loves to hear from her readers and to check out her contemporaries you can find her at www.sarasasek.com
